Let’s talk turkey… or more specifically that after-turkey nap on Thanksgiving day. Here’s a pro tip: Wear stretchy pants to belly up to the buffet, and you won’t have anything to unbutton before you trip into that tryptophan-induced nap.

Actually, experts say that it’s urban legend that the bird’s to blame for our after-dinner drowsiness. We’re lulled into la-la land after a big Thanksgiving meal because our bellies are full and our bodies can’t handle digesting 20 butter-laden casseroles (yum!) while keeping us alert. So we drift away to dreamland and wake up feeling ready to take on round two of the family feud over politics during dessert… or at least have enough energy to run away from it!

In short, when our tummies are too full, our bodies can’t function, but after a break, we can handle anything.

Believe it our not, our bellies and our brains are a lot alike. When your schedule and to-do list are stuffed, you can’t function at your best. Eventually your body will shut down – or you’ll have a breakdown! – if you don’t pause for a little rest and rejuvenation.

YOUR CHALLENGE:

This week, take a cue from the Thanksgiving after-dinner doze and work in some much-needed rest for your busy brain. Remember, the strategy to living your best life is simple… just do one thing to better your life each and every day. Indulge in at least one act of self-care every day of your Thanksgiving break, and you’ll be in a much better state to take on all of the extra tasks that come with the hustle and bustle of the holidays.

I’ll be making time to exercise – something that my mind needs as much as my body but that gets put off when I’m overcommitted and overwhelmed. I’ll also be detaching from devices and turning off my mental to-do list (yes, that includes chores!) for at least one hour each day so I can make memories with my family and give them my undivided attention.

How will you take the challenge?
